The Jetboil Flash is designed for those who like to move fast on the trail and like their water to boil at the same rapid pace. This integrated cooking system has everything you need for easy cooking in the backcountry, as long as all you bring are dehydrated meals. The speedy boil time is the trade-off for essentially having no simmer control. The burner connection also does an excellent job of protecting the flame from the elements, but it could still be improved.

Created in 2001, Jetboil has really risen to the forefront of camp cooking in the last few years. Best known for their Flash integrated canister stove systems—designed to boil water in a prolonged blink of the eye—Jetboil has branched out to introduce an extensive range of cooking products. We looked at the Flash integrated cooking stove to see if it was everything social media and our peers have it cracked up to be.

The Stove

There is a lot to unpack when it comes to this stove, both literally and figuratively. As with most integrated stove systems, you get the burner and a pot or cup attached to the burner. With the Jetboil Flash, you get the burner, attachable “cooking cup,” canister stand, and a plastic cup or bowl for your food or drink. Jetboil has also introduced attachments such as a coffee press, hanging kit, or a flux ring cooking pot that can be added to increase your creature comforts in the backcountry. Everything packs into the cooking cup to create a relatively compact system. This saves you from carrying a separate pot and cooking system that would likely take up more room in your pack.

Ease of Use

The system itself is straightforward to use. Just snap the cooking cup onto the burner, ignite, and watch your water boil. The color-changing heat indicator on the side of the cooking cup will let you know the water is ready before you experience a boil over.

There is a piezo lighter to start the flame without having to wiggle a match into the FluxRing, which you’ll likely end up doing eventually when the piezo lighter gives out, as they have been known to do.

Simmering

Hopefully, you aren’t looking at the Jetboil Flash for its simmering ability because that’s just not what it was designed to do. There is a regulator dial on the burner, but it isn’t much use. Boil Time

It is as if this stove was made purely for this section of the review. You may be able to tell from its name, the Jetboil Flash is built to boil water in a flash. It can boil a liter of water in right around three and a half minutes. The Jetboil website states that the Flash can boil 500 ml of water in only 100 seconds.

This boil time can be impacted heavily by the wind, though. That is because the attachment points allow a fair amount of wind to travel through to the flame. If you are looking for an integrated stove that can handle harsher conditions, check out the MSR WindBurner.

Fuel Use

With the combination of an insulated cooking cup, the FluxRing technology on the bottom of the cup delivers fast boil times. Quick boil times mean less fuel consumption, and less fuel consumption equals more boils per canister. Jetboil’s website states that you can get 10-12 liters of water boiled per 100g fuel canister.

The Bottom Line

The Jetboil Flash is a great stove for campers who live off dehydrated meals and coffee while on the trail. It will boil your water super fast, and you can hold onto the cooking cup right away, thanks to the padded cozy that comes with the stove. So, if you are tired of carrying pots and pans, a stove, and a canister of fuel, look no further. Everything can pack into the cooking cup to keep your cooking setup nice and streamlined. For $109.95, it is expensive, but you do get everything at this price, so you won’t need to buy an additional pot or cup.
