What We Like: Durable ABS shell, Low price
What We Don’t: Heavy, Lacking some adjustment
The Petzl Boreo is the every person helmet; with a low cost and overly durable build, any climber can find a use for this helmet. At only $60, it is rather budget-friendly and while not the lightest of the group at 10.1 oz, most climbers won’t really be able to tell the difference.

Construction
The recently updated construction of the Petzl Boreo makes it especially burly. This rock climbing helmet uses a heavy duty ABS plastic shell that covers the entire head. Mix that with a combination of both EPP and EPS foam that creates a protective layer for your head from potential hazards. The top of the head is protected by EPP foam while the rest of the head is protected by lighter weight EPS foam. The marriage of all three components makes for a very protective and durable helmet that will take a licking and keep your brain ticking.
Adjustability
The Boreo is available as a S/M and a M/L; the M/L is a touch smaller than the M/L equivalent made by Black Diamond, so if you have a big head it is something to look out for. The adjustability of the helmet is straightforward and helps to find a nice snug fit. The plastic adjustment strap across the back of the head is easy to open and close, making it simple to get the helmet on and adjusted. There are also several massive vents along the sides and back of the helmet to keep your head cool while spending a long day on a multi-pitch or simply a warm crag day. A lot of climbing helmets get used as scrambling helmets in the alpine, and this helmet would make a great scrambling helmet as well.
Accessories
As for features, there aren’t that many. The headlamp clips on each corner of the helmet work perfectly, and have a small tooth at the bottom of the clip to really hold the headlamp straps in place. The helmet is available in four colors (blue, red, white, and grey), providing plenty of options to match the helmet to your favorite midlayer or climbing shoes.
The Bottom Line
This is a great climbing helmet that is highly durable and will persevere through lots of bangs and bumps while offering plenty of comfort. The weight is really the only drawback, but if you haven’t tried one of the superlight climbing helmets out there, you won’t even know the difference. At $60, this helmet competes with the Black Diamond Half Dome, but we felt the Half Dome fit a bit better and for only $5 more comes with the wheel adjustment, which is easier to use.
