What We Like: Simple pockets and top handle

What We Don’t: Thin shoulder straps

Fjallraven’s Kanken line is very diverse, as it includes around 20 different varieties of packs. The Kanken 15” Laptop Backpack performs exactly as advertised: it will hold your stuff plus a 15” laptop! Made with a durable Vinylon F and really only having 3 pockets, this bag is perfect for a high school or college student.

Fjallraven makes very good looking backpacks. They are very popular across university and college campuses for their style as well as functionality. The Kanken 15” Laptop Bag is exactly that stylish and functional. With a total capacity of 18l, there is plenty of room for books, lunch, and an extra layer to handle whatever the day throws your way. There are also 17 color options, so there is a color to match every outfit or even your mood.

Storage and Organization

Fjallraven has kept the Kanken nice and simple. There are two side pockets to handle water bottles or umbrellas. Along the front, there is a boxy pocket that has its own dimension, so you are not compromising interior space with the items that are put in the front pocket.

The main compartment opens quite amply to give great access to your books or lunch. A cool feature is the removable foam padding along the back of the main compartment that can act as a seat cushion. This is an easy little addition, but it’s also something that can make the difference for some people.

The laptop sleeve is right along the back of the bag. It is able to hold up to a 15” laptop. There is also a Kanken 17” option if you need a larger laptop pocket. Really, simplicity takes the cake with this pack. There are really only 3 pockets, and they all have a great purpose and serve it well.

Comfort

The Fjallraven Kanken 15” Laptop has two main carry options. There are long top handles so that the backpack can carry like a very large briefcase. The handles can snap together to make for an easier carry too. They are thin and may not be that comfortable over a long period of time though.
The shoulder straps are padded and fairly simple. Certainly, they are not the most comfortable, but with only 18l of cargo, the backpack will never get too heavy so the straps should never become too uncomfortable.

Material and Durability

Fjallraven has used a Vinylon F, and the bag is weather resistant throughout so there is added security for your laptop and gear. The material is also fluorocarbon free as an added environmental bonus. We have not had the bag long enough to determine long term durability, but from reviews online, it seems to be able to withstand daily use and zipper opening and closing.

The Bottom Line

Fjallraven has a dedicated following, and they make attractive bags. The Kanken 15” Laptop Backpack is one of a variety in the Kanken line, so if Fjallraven is a brand you are interested in, there may be a design for you! At $115, it is a reasonable price for the brand name and quality of the bag. There is not as much organizational variety as we have seen in other bags in the EDC Backpack market, but it may be exactly what you are looking for. The laptop pocket is well padded and the main compartment is surprisingly roomy for books and extra layers. Really, it is a great option for a high school or college student who needs more than just a bookbag.
